Welcome to the real world
The Roy Hill lifestyle: providing an environment for you to thrive
At Roy Hill, we understand the challenges that face FIFO workers. So rather than overpromising and papering over cracks, we spend a lot of energy providing an environment that helps support you to thrive (rather than just survive).
Our aim is to help you enjoy the full spectrum of life through encouraging you to make smart safety, social and health choices, both in and outside of work.
It’s all about giving you control over your time in mining. If you choose to take up the opportunities with both hands, you’ll discover that FIFO work can be much more than a job – it can be an experience.
Here’s what to expect at Roy Hill.
At Roy Hill, we have two villages servicing our mining and port operations.
Mine site accommodation village
Our mine site is located in the beautiful terrain of the Pilbara, 340km southeast of Port Hedland. To ensure the pinnacle of comfort, we offer our workers more than a mining camp – we’ve purpose designed an accommodation ‘village’. Set upon 80 hectares in the Chichester Ranges just 15 minutes from the Roy Hill mine, the village has been cleverly thought out, designed to house 2000 permanent workers with everything you need to stimulate your mind, body and soul.
Feel at home every swing by retiring to your room. Each comes with a king-sized single bed, ensuite (toilet and shower), air conditioning, free WiFi, phone, fridge, digital & satellite TV channels and a large selection of movies.
We’ve invested in outstanding facilities to encourage healthy bodies and minds, including a large modern gym (offering daily classes and on site Health & Lifestyle Coordinator), swimming pool, beach volleyball court, dedicated walking track, and two multipurpose courts for soccer, cricket, basketball and tennis.
We believe that workers who get along outside of work will genuinely want to help each other succeed on site. Create new friendships and boost your wellbeing through an array of social activities. Our state-of-the-art auditorium is a popular place for seminars and other social events, while you can enjoy live music on our outdoor stage. Challenge your mates at the racing car and golf simulators in the dedicated shift change facility, or organise a BBQ with a range of hotplates around camp (you can order BBQ packs free of charge).
Wet mess and site tavern
Socialising over a drink and meal with friends is a great way to unwind after a long day at work. The village wet mess features an indoor area complete with table tennis, foosball, snooker, darts, tables, chairs and lounge areas, while the beer garden is your go-to place to enjoy mid-strength beer and wine by the glass. ‘Takeaways’ are limited and only available for a short time. Note that Roy Hill has a zero tolerance for drug abuse – all workers must complete a breathalyser test before starting work. If you feel you’re relying too much on alcohol, speak to someone and ask for help.
Stay in touch with your loved ones, thanks to our Telstra 4G tower that covers the entire village.
We stock a range of products available at the village shop, with essentials such as bottled water and toiletries available at subsidised prices.
Gateway Village (South Hedland)
We have selected Gateway Village to service our port operation at South West Creek. While the village has been purpose built for FIFO workers as a home away from home, its prime location on the doorstep of Port Hedland allows us to offer a far less isolated experience. You won’t find a pool, basketball courts or an auditorium. Instead, you’ll enjoy easy access to the town of Port Hedland, fully established to accommodate a thriving 20,000-strong population.
Enjoy being walking distance to the South Hedland shopping precinct complete with supermarkets, department stores, restaurants and bars (shuttle bus runs after work each Thursday), with Hedland’s sports stadiums and other outstanding facilities on your doorstep.
New, modern accommodation (permanent rooms)
Feel at home on site every swing by retiring to the same room – your room. All residents can enjoy a large room with a king-sized single bed, ensuite (toilet and shower), air conditioning, TV, phone and fridge. Stay connected to your loved ones with free WiFi, Foxtel (including Fox Sports) and digital TV.
To help you unwind in your downtime, Gateway Village features a relaxing recreation room and tavern, which includes indoor and outdoor areas, pool table and café. The dining room offers workers a delicious international menu including barista made coffee and specialty dinners. You’ll also find a library, function rooms, outdoor BBQ area, free lockers, 24-hour security and ample parking.
Health & wellness
Keep your health and fitness in check, with a state-of-the-art fitness gym, cardio room and Activelife personal trainers.
Gateway Village’s Amigo Shop To Go store is right on your doorstep, stocking a range of items including groceries, newspapers, magazines and snacks.
Family friendly rosters
We fought hard to design longer rest periods between swings so you can spend more time with family and friends. Seize the opportunity to relish a healthy work-life balance with our desirable 14:10, 14:11 or 8:6 rosters, flying out from Perth to our remote mine site or Port Hedland. We work 12.5 hours a day, plus a bus ride to and from the accommodation to your work site.
We provide quality fresh food with lots of healthy options and variations. All Roy Hill workers are provided three meals a day, including a takeaway lunch which you pack yourself before starting work.
Roy Hill has initiatives in place to help keep your family life happy and healthy while you’re away, including family site visit days (to the mine site).
Health and safety
As our most valuable resource, we’ll teach you the safe way to use equipment, including operating machinery and vehicles, so you can take on your job with confidence. We also have 24-hour on site medical and emergency services.
Stimulate your hunger for success and prevent boredom by engaging in further learning on site.
Enjoy the full spectrum of life, with classes run on site by employees, for employees (like photography classes).
The real experience
As a smaller mining organisation, Roy Hill is so human you can get your arms around it. This is unique in the mining industry, allowing you to get to know real people, connect with them and experience a true mining community.
At Roy Hill, we know working FIFO doesn’t last forever. We don’t even use the word ‘careers’. Instead, we’re all about “lifelong learning” – nurturing you through support, training and learning to help set you up for a bright future, even after your time in mining is up. Our Skills Development Program provides the opportunity to receive on the job training delivered at national standards while simultaneously gaining a formal qualification.
